ECP disqualifies three PTI Parliamentarians amid conviction in May 9 cases

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified three Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentarians on Monday following their conviction in May 9 cases in court.

The parliamentarian includes Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Malik Ahmed Khan Bachar, PTI MNA Mohammad Ahmed Chattha, and Senator Ejaz Chaudry.

All three lawmakers were found guilty and convicted in the May 9 cases, according to the notification by ECP.

“As a consequence, Chattha, MNA from NA-66 Wazirabad and Ahmad Khan, MPA from PP-87 Mianwali-III, have become disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution of The Islamic Republic of Pakistan for being members of the National Assembly and Provincial Assembly of Punjab, respectively,” stated the notification.

“Notification to the extent of Ahmed Chattha and Ahmad Khan as returned candidates is recalled with immediate effect.”

Earlier, Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmed Bhachar was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the May 9 case.

The Sargodha Anti-Terrorism Court sentenced 70 accused to 10 years in prison in the May 9 case.

The Sargodha Anti-Terrorism Court has also sentenced MNA Ahmed Chatta to ten years in prison.

It should be noted that most of the accused in the Mianwali riot and vandalism case are out on bail.

On May 9, 2023, a case was filed in Mianwali for vandalism and riots in response to protests sparked by the arrest of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a corruption case.

According to the report, the sentence against the accused was pronounced in case number 72/2023, which was registered in the Musakhel area of ​​Mianwali district.

The case was registered under the provisions of anti-terrorism for vandalism, arson and rioting
