ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet meeting convened today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to approve the 27th Amendment has been postponed.

According to sources, the federal cabinet meeting scheduled for today was postponed due to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s busy schedule.

The cabinet meeting was to approve the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

Proposed 27th Constitutional Amendments

The federal government has prepared a preliminary draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which includes important proposals related to the judicial structure and federal powers, according to media reports.

According to media reports, the proposed draft will be presented to the Senate after approval from the cabinet.

Under the proposed amendment, it has been proposed to establish a 9-member Constitutional Court in place of the constitutional bench, so that decisions on constitutional matters can be made in a more organized and transparent manner.

The amendment also proposes a new procedure for the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner

According to the proposal, if a deadlock arises between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, the matter will be referred to the Supreme Judicial Council.

According to sources, the proposed amendment also includes a proposal to give constitutional cover to the post of Field Marshal and retain this title for life. Giving limited constitutional powers to the Field Marshal is being considered.

The amendment bill will seek to build consensus on bringing the education and health sectors back under federal jurisdiction.

The government says the amendments are aimed at institutional coherence and making the state system more effective
