RAWALPINDI: A guard of honour was presented to Field Marshal Asim Munir, the first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Pakistan, during a historic moment in Pakistan’s military leadership at Rawalpindi’s GHQ on Monday.
Contingents from all three forces, the Pakistan Army, Navy, and Air Force, participated in the guard of honour that was held in honor of his new role. Also present at the event were Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar.
Field Marshal Asim Munir was officially notified as the first Chief of Defence Forces of Pakistan on Friday after major constitutional changes were brought under the 27th Amendment. The amendment consolidated the powers of the Army Chief and the joint command into one slot.
Under the new dispensation, the office of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) has been abolished and all operational, administrative, and strategic authority transferred to the CDF.
Alongside this, the Pakistan Army Act of 1952 was also amended to bring military laws in line with the constitutional changes. These changes in the law now enable the president, upon the advice of the prime minister, to appoint or extend the tenure of the Chief of Defence Forces.
