KARACHI: Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah announced free electricity to consumers consuming up to 100 units, here on Thursday.
As per the details, the government will provide this free electricity from solar parks and mini-grid stations, the minister announced, as the PPP-led government in Sindh has raised five billion rupees for the much-needed project.
Pakistan’s electricity demand is growing at full speed and despite the shift to solar energy, there is a challenge for the government as the generation gap is huge, especially in summer.
Under the government’s plan, a scheme will be introduced to provide solar panels at a highly subsidized price, especially to the less privileged and low electricity consumers.
In another positive development, the Sindh government has decided to distribute 200,000 solar panels to the poor and lower class, with the government bearing the bulk of the cost of the panels and the people paying just 20 percent.
