RAWALPINDI: In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the Deputy Commissioner of Rawalpindi has announced a one-day public holiday across the district here on Thursday.

A formal notification has been issued, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to ensure safety during the ongoing heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

Authorities in the twin cities have called in the Pakistan Army’s 111 Brigade to remain on high alert amid a worsening flood emergency.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) confirmed that its personnel contacted the 111 Brigade when heavy rains caused the water level in Nallah Layyah and other drainage channels to rise to dangerous levels, indicating the seriousness of the situation as the city’s infrastructure struggles to cope with the monsoon floods.

Civil body teams have been mobilized with heavy machinery in the flood-affected areas as the water level in Nallah Layyah rose to 16 feet in Katarian and 14 feet in Gowalmandi.

“The cooperation of the Pakistan Army in managing any large-scale evacuation or rescue efforts is very important in case the water situation worsens further,” WASA officials said, adding that the 111 brigade is ready to respond quickly if required.

The Meteorological Department has predicted more rain under the influence of a weak low-pressure system and westerly waves. These weather systems are pushing strong monsoon winds in the upper parts of the country, with more rain likely in the next 24 hours.

Rescue 1122 is also on high alert, and the district administration has appealed to residents of structurally weak or low-lying buildings to evacuate immediately. The situation is fluid as authorities brace for possible flooding or structural collapse.
