ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has applied to run for the post of chancellor at Oxford University despite being in jail.

As per the details, Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 on charges he claims is politically motivated, completed his degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford in 1975.

Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, a close aide of Khan, confirmed the development on social media platform X, saying that Khan’s application for Chancellor of Oxford University election 2024 has been submitted from jail. Bukhari called for support for Khan’s “historic campaign”, emphasizing the former prime minister’s continued influence and ambition even in prison.

Khan, who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, faces a complicated legal situation in his country. Despite previous convictions being suspended or expunged, he remains in custody on the new charges.

The Chancellor of the University of Oxford is elected by the members of Convocation, which includes all alumni who have been awarded a degree. To be eligible, candidates must be nominated by at least two convocation members. This role is largely ceremonial but carries significant prestige within the university.

The election of the new chancellor will take place online during the third week of the Michaelmas term, starting on 28 October.
