Imran Khan, KP CM Gandapur booked in case over police constable’s death

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including party founder Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, have been charged with attempted murder of the police constable and other offenses in a recent PTI Protest at D- Chowk Islamabad.

During the violent attacks at the PTI protest a police constable, identified as Abdul Hameed, was allegedly attacked and tortured by PTI activists while he was on duty at Chongi 26 on October 04, 2024. Constable Hameed got severely injured and succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Later, the funeral prayer of martyred Constable Hamid Shah was offered at D-Chowk and was attended by federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Islamabad IG Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, and Punjab IG Dr Usman Anwar.

A case has been registered at Noon Police Station on behalf of the state, naming PTI leaders Azam Swati, Omar Ayub, and others, along with 500 unidentified individuals.

The case includes charges of attempted murder, arson, attack on the state, violence against police personnel, and violations of the anti-terrorism act.

According to the first information report (FIR), protesters attacked policemen with sticks, stones, and iron rods, tore their uniforms, fired at them, shelled tear gas, and set government and public property ablaze. The FIR also states that protesters raised slogans against the government and the state.

This incident is part of a series of protests staged by PTI for the independence of the judiciary and the release of party founder Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail for over a year.

Although, the federal government imposed Section 144 in Islamabad prohibiting any public gathering the PTI protesters violated the law and entered the Federal territory.

Clashes between law enforcers and party workers ensued, with both sides blaming each other for the violence.

Several PTI leaders and Imran Khan’s sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan among 105 others, were detained during the protest and are currently under police custody.

Earlier, former PM Imran Khan was booked in 16 other cases at the Kohsar Police Station including charges of robbery and kidnapping and masterminding the PTI protest at D-Chowk Islamabad.
