KARACHI: Authorities in Karachi are continuing their investigation into a deep well found next to the Malir River Dam, which is believed to have been dug to steal oil or gas.

The site contained gas cylinders and connection gear, raising questions about illegal activity in the vicinity. Reports from police indicate the possibility of a body inside the well, but efforts to rescue the body have not proceeded due to gas levels.

First responders have difficulty entering the well, and representatives from Pak-Arab Refinery Company Limited (PARCO) and Sui Southern Gas Company are also present.

Officials from PARCO said the gas line was located far away from the plot, said to be where the well was located, and two vehicles and a motorcycle were identified near the plot.

The colleagues contacted the emergency services after failing to recover the body and departed the scene. Further investigation will follow regarding the circumstances around the incident. Police say they will be able to assist with rescue efforts only once the gas to the line is shut off.

Gas theft is a serious problem in Pakistan, which has been experiencing endless energy crises for decades. In January 2025, Sui South Gas Company announced over 14,000 illegal gas connections were disconnected in Sindh and Balochistan.

Furthermore, thousands of illegal domestic gas connections were removed in Karachi in one month illustrating ongoing measures against gas theft. In summation, it shows that vigilance from both authorities and energy companies is paramount to eliminate these incidents and to keep the public safe.
