LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of Air Punjab, the province’s first–ever provincial airline, and the Lahore-Rawalpindi bullet train project.
At a meeting on Saturday, she also reviewed the status of Air Punjab and the bullet train project. CM Maryam formally approved Air Punjab‘s operations, starting with a domestic airline in Pakistan.
Air Punjab aims to operate with four Airbus aircraft by leasing the planes to launch the airline, and it hopes to operate internationally as long as it has a successful first year and has demonstrated service standards.
International operations will depend on many factors, including the approval process and the demand for the airline to prosper. The bullet train is expected to cut the travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to around two and a half hours. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb will partner with Pakistan Railways and possibly follow the public-private partnership model.
Separately, CM Maryam Nawaz directed the proposals for high-speed train services on six new routes in Punjab, including: Lahore-Shahdara-Narowal; Faisalabad-Chak Jhumra-Shaheenabad.
The meeting also reported progress on other mass transit projects, including Lahore Yellow Line and Gujranwala Mass Transit Line, with predicted completion dates.
