LAHORE: The Lahore Traffic Police will take strong action against motorcyclists moving around without helmets. The purpose behind this move is to prevent fatal road accidents across the metropolis.

“The administration will not allow helmetless motorcyclists to ride on Main Boulevard, Mall Road, Canal Road, and Jail Road,” said Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, adding that “special traffic police teams have been deployed at all entry and exit points of the city to make the campaign effective.

Through the campaign, we aim to reduce deaths of motorcyclists, the majority of those killed in traffic accidents are motorcyclists”.
The traffic police had registered 139 accidents across the city in which 96 motorcyclists were killed, and according to them.
He stated that more than 73% of people who die in fatal accidents are motorcyclists, who lose their lives from injuries, including head injuries. Shirazi further mentioned that out of over 8.2 million vehicles in Lahore, there are more than 6.1 million motorcycles registered.
These motorcycles not only account for the majority of accidents but are also the primary cause of deaths in traffic collisions.
Head injuries, a major cause of fatal motorcycle accidents, have reportedly decreased by 40% in the city following the recent enforcement efforts targeting riders without helmets, according to the city traffic police’s estimations.
“The goal of the enforcement campaign is to reduce fatal road crashes, not to fill the treasury via fines”, he said. “I appeal to citizens of Lahore to wear helmets for your safety rather than out of fear of receiving a fine; wearing a helmet and lane driving will guarantee your safety”.
