Lahore zoo hikes ticket prices for 2025

LAHORE: The Lahore Zoo, a favorite tourist destination, saw a chaotic scene on New Year’s Day as visitors were greeted with a surprise increase in the entry fee.

The private company that has taken over the management of the zoo, under a Rs500-million contract, introduced a new entry fee structure, which raised the cost of admission to Rs300.

This action provoked several protests from the visitors who had come from many cities to visit the zoo with their families. The increased fee was considered too exorbitant and unfair by many visitors who found themselves boiling out in anger and opted to leave from there in protest.

The bundling of the tickets, which actually included the official zoo entry ticket of Rs 100 and an extra Rs 200 entry fee for the snakes house, were the items of controversy. 

According to visitors, this was not fair because people who were not interested in the snake house were still made to part with their money. The situation called for heated arguments between visitors and the zoo administration, with most calling for the creation of more flexible and affordable ticketing.

One visitor summed up the sentiment, saying, “Charging Rs300 for entry is excessive and unfair. People who do not wish to see the snake house should have the choice to opt out.” Protests and media coverage eventually led to the private company revising its policy to allow visitors to purchase separate tickets for the snake house.

The zoo administration has forwarded its plans to introduce new facilities in the coming days, each with different ticket prices. 

Though such a proposal was driven to modernize and develop the zoo experience, it is widely debated among the citizens relating to its accessibility and affordability by the families. 

Due to the privatization of the zoo, the low-income families are worried because the fees will be higher and they would not be able to afford it. 

This has highlighted the need for a more sophisticated pricing and ticketing model that will allow the zoo to balance its revenue needs with its accessibility and affordability needs. The zoo should always evolve and improve, making sure that it is always a welcoming and inclusive place for visitors of all backgrounds.
