KARACHI: Karachiites witnessed a spectacular celestial display during the early hours of Monday as meteor showers lit up the night sky over the metropolis, creating dazzling trails of light.
The celestial phenomenon, which was visible in various parts of the city at approximately 2:43 am, quickly flooded social media with many citizens capturing videos of the meteorite moment.
The meteors, often referred to as a shooting star, were spotted in different parts of Karachi, including Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi Town, and surrounding areas.
According to experts, such meteorite sightings occur regularly, adding to the thrill of stargazing.
Meanwhile, astronomers explain that meteors are fragments of asteroids that orbit the Sun and enter the Earth’s atmosphere due to its gravity. It ignites upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere due to friction with air.
As they fall towards Earth, the friction with the atmosphere causes them to light up, creating brilliant streaks of light that are often referred to as “falling stars.”
The luminous trails they leave behind can be seen from Earth as they burn up in the atmosphere before hitting the ground, a natural celestial phenomenon.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a space research agency based in the United States, estimated that between 100 and 300 tonnes of space debris, mostly the size of sand grains, descend on Earth daily.
