PESHAWAR: To provide public safety and uphold order during the sacred Ashura holidays, Peshawar authorities have said they would shut down mobile phone services on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
The mobile phone service, according to a police spokesperson, was suspended today on Friday, 8th Muharram, immediately after Jumma (Friday) prayers. Service is likely to resume late Sunday evening after 10 PM, after the Ashura activities are over.
The move is a part of increased security arrangements to ensure there are no unfortunate incidents at the religious processions. The spokesperson said the action would contribute towards enhanced surveillance at sensitive points and aid efforts in ensuring peace during this critical period.
Apart from the closure of the mobile service during the processions, law enforcers will use advanced monitoring equipment such as drone cameras, CCTV, and other surveillance systems to monitor the processions and maintain participants’ safety.
Ashura, which falls on the 10th of Muharram, is one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar, with huge processions and gatherings throughout Pakistan.
