ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior member, Qadir Patel, has recommended the committee to implement dual citizenship law on bureaucrats.

While considering the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2024, during the meeting, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmakers questioned the appointment of bureaucrats having dual citizenship.

Patel told the committee that 22,000 bureaucrats are dual citizens.

“Members of the National Assembly (MNA) and judges cannot have dual citizenship because they have secrets,” Qadir Patel

He remarked that bureaucrats have more secrets than politicians but still, we [politicians] have the limitations of being dual citizens.

The amendment bill, 2024 proposed changes in section 14A of the Pakistan Citizenship Act, 1951.

The bill draft proposed the addition of new sub-sections in the act.

“Subject to notification on by the Federal government in the official Gazette under sub-section (3) of section 14, any person who has renounced citizenship of Pakistan under sub-section (1). may resume citizenship in Pakistan by making a declaration in the prescribed manner and upon making of such
declaration he may thereupon become a citizen of Pakistan,” the draft read.
