ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is moving towards digital documentation with a new initiative by NADRA as it launches digital birth and death registration across Pakistan.

In a major step towards digital transformation, NADRA launched a digital birth and death registration system across the country, enabling hospitals and healthcare facilities to register life events directly in a national database.

The initiative is a key component of the URAN Pakistan program, which aims to integrate technology into governance and support economic development. Developed under the National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework with technical assistance from the World Bank, the system marks a significant upgrade in Pakistan’s civil documentation infrastructure.

Through this innovative system, hospitals and health centers across the country will now be able to report births and deaths in real time, ensuring that timely and accurate data is recorded nationally. This data will also play a critical role in shaping digital identity initiatives and supporting the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP).

Agreements have already been signed with the governments of Sindh and Balochistan for the implementation of the new system, while similar collaborations are expected in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan soon.

In a parallel move to facilitate access to identity for citizens, NADRA has also launched a public service initiative to offer free CNIC to first-time applicants. Individuals applying for their first National Identity Card can now obtain a non-chip CNIC at no cost, with a simple process ensuring delivery within 15 working days.
