NEW YORK: Pakistan strongly condemns Israel’s continued military aggression against Syria, calling it not only irresponsible but also dangerous and a deliberate attempt to destabilize the region.
Pakistan has called for an immediate end to all violations of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. It has stressed full respect for the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and all relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Delivering a national statement during a briefing on the situation in Syria at the Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and President of the Security Council, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said that Israel’s continued violations are a sign of recklessness.
He said that the failure of the international community to hold Israel accountable has further exacerbated these violations, which are undermining the global order based on the UN Charter and the principles of international law.
He said that whether it is Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iran or Yemen, Israel is acting outside the bounds of international law, in complete violation of the principles of state sovereignty, non-interference, and the prohibition of the use of force enshrined in Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. This impunity must end now.
The Pakistani ambassador said that the Israeli attacks are taking place at a time when Syria is going through a delicate but important transitional phase. He said that after more than a decade of war, a new hope is emerging among the Syrian people for peace, dignity and the reconstruction of their country.
He said that there are clear signs of re-establishment of relations at the political and economic levels, major sanctions have been lifted, which has provided relief to the Syrian economy, and slow but clear progress is being made towards national reconstruction.
He added that while strengthening security remains an ongoing and challenging task, the Syrian leadership has demonstrated a willingness to strengthen and reconcile its relations internally and with the regional and international community.
He stated that the Syrian leadership has not only expressed its intention to establish peaceful relations with the wider region, but has also openly stated it. In such a situation, Israel’s attacks on Syrian state institutions are highly irrational and harmful.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said that Israel’s repeated violations amount to direct interference in Syria’s internal affairs, which weaken national institutions, hinder reconstruction, and undermine reconciliation efforts.
He said that what Syria needs at this time is not aggression and sabotage, but solidarity and support. “Promoting internal harmony, cohesion and inclusion—embracing Syria’s multicultural society—is the only way to advance reconciliation and ensure nationwide stability, which is consistent with the key principles of Security Council Resolution 2254,” he said.
Pakistan said that undermining Syria’s state sovereignty through external attacks creates a dangerous security vacuum. He said such conditions could lead to the resurgence of terrorist and extremist groups, which could pose a threat not only to Syria but also to the entire region and the world.
Addressing the Security Council members, he said: “Israel’s actions are not only illegal but ultimately self-defeating, as they create the very instability it claims to avoid.”
Ambassador Asim stated that Syria requires space and support for reform, rehabilitation, and national reconstruction. He urged the international community to work together to secure the region’s stability and promote prospects for a just and lasting peace.
Concluding his statement, he said: “At this critical juncture, Pakistan expresses its full solidarity with the Syrian people.”
