ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government has approved the recruitment of over 1,000 personnel in Pakistan Railways to strengthen internal management, passenger safety and asset protection.
In the first phase, 81 Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) and 914 Constables will be recruited. ASI candidates should have intermediate education, while Matriculation is required for Constables.
Seats have been reserved for women and minority communities to ensure equal opportunities for both the posts.
The recruitment process will be conducted on merit in a transparent manner, including written exams, physical tests and interviews. Official advertisements will soon appear in national newspapers and on government websites.
According to a report by the Ministry of Railways, Pakistan Railways has shown signs of financial recovery, reporting a profit in the current fiscal year after facing losses in previous years.
The report revealed that in the three-year period from 2022-23 to 2024-25, the railways incurred a total loss of Rs. 6 billion. In 2022-23, the revenue stood at Rs. 63.718 billion while the expenditure reached Rs. 72.178 billion, resulting in a deficit of Rs. 8.460 billion. The following year, 2023-24, the revenue increased to Rs. 88.792 billion, slightly ahead of the expenditure of Rs. 88.380 billion, generating a marginal surplus of Rs. 410 million
For the current financial year 2024-25, Pakistan Railways reported a revenue of Rs. 93.382 billion, making a profit of Rs. 91.120 billion against an expenditure of Rs. 2.262 billion.
