Social media has a new obsession, and this time, it involves a nostalgic twist of chiffon and vintage charm. After the recent craze of realistic 3D figurines created through Google Gemini’s AI tools, a new trend has emerged: the Google Gemini Nano Banana AI Saree trend.

The last few days saw feeds filled with portraits of women in dainty chiffon sarees, sporting period hairstyles, and bathed in a warm, soft golden light. The pictures are not actual photographs but have been created using AI, yet they are so realistic that many have admitted to double-taking.

How the trend works

The trend revolves around Gemini’s Nano Banana, a playful name for an AI image-generation tool built into the Google Gemini app. The feature lets users transform their solo portraits into vintage-style saree pictures reminiscent of old Bollywood posters or Ghibli-inspired art.

Its users must download the Google Gemini app and log in with their Google account to participate in the trend. Upon entering, they click on the Banana icon, choose a clear solo pic, and paste a detailed description of the intended appearance.

The request can include conditions regarding the saree color, lighting hue, hairdo, and even the mood of the photograph. In a matter of seconds, the AI works its magic, transforming a mundane selfie into a breathtaking vintage portrait.

One of the widely circulated popular prompts online requests Gemini to design a “4K realistic portrait of an Indian girl wearing a transparent red saree, with gentle golden light creating a soft shadow on a blank wall behind her.”

While most are jumping on the bandwagon for sheer creativity and entertainment value, some are ringing warning bells. Others have questioned privacy, urging caution when sharing personal photos with AI tools.

One woman even called her experience “creepy” after Gemini’s AI added a mole on her left hand that was not visible in the photo she uploaded, a mole she actually has. She wondered how the app knew about it, sparking debates over how much data these tools might be gathering.

Nevertheless, the obsession keeps on increasing. Currently, the Nano Banana saree portraits are injecting a dash of desi sparkle into timelines, one chiffon drape at a time.
