Pakistani woman journalist Mona Khan ‘detained’ in Greece; Here’s why

Athens: Pakistani journalist Mona Khan detained in Greece for waving the Pakistani flag during a hiking trip, here on Saturday.

According to the media reports, Mona was held by Greek police for displaying the Pakistani flag during a hike. The accused lamented police mistreatment of her, accusing cops of discrimination.

The journalist from the Asian nation is in southeastern Europe with her son, who remained in Athens while she embarked on a hiking expedition.

Pakistan seeks consular access for arrested journalist

The Pakistani Embassy in Greece intervened to seek consular access to Mona Khan. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mumtaz Zahra, confirmed that the embassy is actively investigating the circumstances of her detention.

Mona’s coach approached Pakistani authorities for her immediate release as the incident raised concerns about the safety and treatment of Pakistani nationals in Greece.

As per available information, Pakistani embassy personnel visited her in jail and discussed the issue with Greek authorities.

As runners from Pakistan have participated in other long-distance foot races across the globe, Mona was among a few who were representing Pakistan in the Marathon in Greece.
