PESHAWAR: A formal petition has been filed with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)for the disqualification of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
The petition filed by High Court lawyer Mian Sibghatullah Shah Advocate has taken the position that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has violated several articles of the Constitution of Pakistan by supporting the candidates of the Insaf Lawyers Forum in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council elections.
According to the text of the petition, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi visited the Peshawar High Court on October 29, 2025, and announced his support for the candidates of the Insaf Lawyers Forum, which conflicts with his oath of office and constitutional responsibilities.
According to the petitioner, this move of the Chief Minister is a clear violation of Articles 2-A, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 25 of the Constitution as well as Article 22(7), which has cast doubt on his trustworthiness and honesty.
Mian Sibghatullah Shah Advocate took the stand that the Chief Minister is the representative of all the citizens of the province, and not of any particular lawyers’ organization.
His involvement in the election campaign of any group or organization falls under the category of injustice.
The petition has requested that the Election Commission immediately disqualify Chief Minister Sohail Afridi from office and remove him from the membership of the Chief Minister and the Provincial Assembly.
The petition further states that the Election Commission should also issue an interim order to restrain Sohail Afridi from supporting the candidates of the Insaf Lawyers Forum, so that no influence is used before the bar elections.
Copies of the petition have also been sent to the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chairman Pakistan Bar Council, Chairman Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council, and President of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association.
