LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has taken drastic measures against bottled water plants, sealing eight facilities due to alarming levels of chemical and bacterial contamination.
Laboratory tests conducted by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) revealed that several brands of bottled water contained hazardous contaminants, exceeding permissible limits set by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).
This poses a significant public health risk, especially in a country where water contamination is already a major concern.
The contaminated bottled water was found to contain excessive levels of arsenic, sodium, potassium, and microbiological contaminants. As a result, the PFA has shut down plants in Sahiwal, Multan, Faisalabad, and Sialkot.
According to PFA Director General Asim Javed, these plants will remain closed until they implement corrective measures, including improved water quality, mandatory medical tests for workers, and documented filter replacements.
