ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shafqat Abbas has strongly criticized the recent verdicts related to the May 9 incidents in the ABN program BADLO, calling them a blatant violation of justice.
He pointed out major contradictions in the witnesses’ statements, highlighting that in some instances the number of witnesses was stated as 14 while in others it was 54, raising serious questions about the credibility of the proceedings.
Abbas said that punishments handed down based on such dubious testimonies undermine the principles of justice. He further stated that six MNAs, three MPAs, and one senator, all elected by the people, have been unjustly sentenced, describing the verdicts as an act of strangling justice.
According to him, these decisions were made under pressure, and the judiciary will eventually have to apologize to the entire nation.
He reiterated that such actions cannot weaken PTI’s resolve and that the party will continue its struggle with determination.
On the other hand, PML-N leader Shizra Mansab defended the sentences, saying the May 9 events were not a spontaneous reaction but a well-planned attack that the entire nation witnessed.
She asserted that the punishments were not politically motivated but delivered strictly through judicial and legal processes. Mansab added that PTI’s founder had issued threats before his arrest, and during the Zaman Park sit-ins, party workers were deliberately prepared to react violently in case of his detention.
She emphasized that the desecration of martyrs’ monuments and attacks on military installations were all captured on video and widely available on social media, proving that May 9 was an open rebellion against the Pakistan Army. According to her, making noise over judicial verdicts amounts to contempt of court.
Shizra Mansab also stated that the government made efforts to improve the judicial system through the 26th constitutional amendment, yet it still took two years for decisions in these cases, indicating that further reforms are essential.
She accused PTI of never being willing to sit for judicial reforms and instead consistently trying to pressure state institutions for political gains.
