Every year on May 1st, Labor Day is honored globally to honor the rights and contributions of workers. The day commemorates the 1886 Chicago demonstrations, in which laborers demanded that their 14-hour workday be cut to eight hours.
Many workers were killed when the protests descended into violent altercations. Since then, May 1st has been recognized as Labor Day worldwide.
The first Labour Policy was observed in 1972, marking the official recognition of Labour Day in Pakistan. Since then, seminars, rallies, and other activities have been held to raise awareness of the workers’ rights and struggles.
To guarantee nationwide commemoration, the federal government has also declared May 1, 2025, a public holiday.
