LAHORE: The Punjab government has rolled out a plan to distribute free solar panels across the province to households consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that the government will also provide solar systems to consumers using between 200 and 500 units of electricity per month.
The government will cover 90 percent of the cost of the solar panels while the remaining 10 percent will be paid by consumers using up to 500. The solar panels will be provided to consumers in interest-free easy installments over five years.
As per recent details, the Punjab govt has finalized the plan for distributing free solar systems, which was earlier announced to initiate on August 14. Govt has planned to distribute solar panels worth 30 billion rupees under the scheme.
Chief Minister Punjab approved the project which will be rolled out in different phases. In the pilot phase of the solarization scheme, solar systems will be provided at no cost to consumers who use up to 200 units of electricity.
For the initial phase, two districts, Rajanpur and Attock, have been selected for the distribution of free solar systems and the pilot project will commence in October.
In the second phase of the project, solar systems will be distributed in less developed districts across Punjab. Consumers using up to 200 units of electricity will receive these systems for free, while those consuming up to 500 units will have access to interest-free loans for solar panel installation.
