Punjab local elections scheduled for last week of December: Election Commission

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission has given a reserved decision on the petitions regarding the delay in the local government elections in Punjab and said that elections will be held in Punjab in December.

The Election Commission’s decision has said that the local government elections in Punjab will be held in the last week of December, and the Election Commission will conduct local government elections in Punjab under the 2022 law.

The decision regarding the local government elections was issued by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, members Nisar Durrani, Shah Muhammad Jatoi and Babar Hassan Bharwana, directing the start of delimitation in Punjab from tomorrow.

During the hearing, the Chief Election Commissioner and other members of the commission were told that the local government laws of Punjab have been amended 5 times and are now being amended for the sixth time, however, elections can be held under the Election Act 2022.

The Election Commission said that the Punjab government’s behavior is delaying and contrary to constitutional obligations, and the local government elections in Punjab will be held under the current law.

It should be recalled that a few days ago, on the request of Jamaat-e-Islami, the Lahore High Court summoned the Advocate General and Chief Secretary of Punjab for not holding local government elections in Punjab.
