Punjab to set up Public Liaison Committees to boost police-citizen engagement

LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has directed the establishment of Public Liaison Committees (PLCs) across the province to foster cooperation between citizens and law enforcement agencies.

These committees, comprised of government officials and community representatives, will act as community watchdogs, identifying potential threats and reporting suspicious activities.

They will also facilitate information exchange between citizens and police, assist in religious ceremonies and public gatherings, and promote citizen awareness at the local level.

The PLCs will include local dignitaries, traders, elected representatives, religious leaders, and trustworthy youth and social workers. Each committee will hold monthly meetings, co-chaired by the Assistant Commissioner and Sub-Divisional Police Officer.

The committees will operate under District Liaison Committees, with monthly progress reviews by District Coordination Committees, which will then report to the Provincial Coordination Committee.

The Punjab Home Department has set a deadline of April 20 for the activation of these committees and has instructed all deputy commissioners, regional police officers, district police officers, city police officers, and the Capital City Police Officer to prioritize their formation. The department will review the performance of all PLCs.

The establishment of PLCs aims to increase trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies, helping to address threats of terrorism and extremism. By working together, citizens and police can build a safer and more informed community.¹
