ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice has directed to increase the salaries of federal law officers and has also sought an early progress report from the relevant institutions on this issue.

A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice was held in Islamabad, in which a detailed review of the salaries and benefits of federal and provincial law officers was conducted. During the meeting, members expressed concern that the salaries of federal law officers are lower than those of law officers of many provinces, due to which professional problems are arising.

During the meeting, the chairman of the committee directed the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to appropriately increase the salaries of federal law officers. Providing better financial facilities to officers involved in legal matters is essential for an effective and quality legal system.

The meeting also considered a proposal that if the salaries of federal law officers are increased, they should not be allowed to practice private law or private practice. The committee was of the view that after better salaries, law officers should focus fully on their official duties to avoid potential conflict of interest.

During the meeting, the Deputy Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) sought more time from the committee to provide complete details of salaries and other financial incentives. The committee, while accepting his request, directed that all the required information be submitted by July 30 so that the matter could be considered in the next meeting.

The committee members also stressed that there should be a clear and fair salary structure for legal officers serving in federal institutions. Better incentives will not only encourage professionals to work in the government sector but will also further improve the efficiency of the legal system.
