Development comes a day after Justice (retd) Naqvi stepped down from his post

In an unexpected turn of events, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, the second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, has tendered his resignation. This development has raised eyebrows, especially considering his anticipated role as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan after the current Chief Justice, Qazi Faez Isa. This notable announcement follows closely on the heels of the resignation of Justice (retd) Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, whose departure has already been accepted by President Arif Alvi. Both Justice Ahsan and Justice Naqvi were regarded as being ‘close’ to former Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial. Analysts have pointed out that these jurists were involved in issuing some controversial orders, along with another judge, Justice Munib Akhtar.

Justice Ahsan’s decision to step down from his esteemed position adds an element of uncertainty to the succession plan within the Supreme Court.
