ISLAMABAD: A District and Sessions Court in Islamabad Friday acquitted Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in a case regarding making defamatory remarks against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mahmood announced the reserved verdict on Rashid’s acquittal plea. Sheikh Rashid appeared before the court along with his lawyers Masroof Khan and Sardar Shehbaz Raza.
The case was filed against the former interior minister in 2023 at Islamabad’s Aabpara Police Station for putting an allegation on Asif Zardari of plotting to assassinate former prime minister Imran Khan.
Rashid was booked under three sections — 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief).
In the FIR, Zardari stated that the AML chief tried to badmouth a former president and cause a permanent danger to the PPP co-chairman and his family. With his provocatory allegations, Rasheed wants to cause a fight between the PTI and the PPP to disrupt the country’s peace, the FIR added.
Speaking to the media, the firebrand politician said “With Allah’s help, I have been acquitted today, though 14 terrorism cases remain.”
The former federal minister further remarked that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have become symbols of public disdain.
