KARACHI: The School Education & Literacy Department Sindh on Friday issued orders for the appointment of 4,588 teachers in the first phase in government schools across the province.

On the instructions of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, the process of appointing teachers under the “Student-Teacher Ratio (STR)” in government schools has begun, the statement issued by the department said.

The provincial education minister, in a statement, said that the availability of teachers in Sindh’s government schools will be ensured at every possible level.

In this regard, the education department has appointed the teachers at their own taluka level as per the need and convenience. This appointment aims to ensure the availability of teachers in schools as per the needs of the students, the statement read.

Under the Student-Teacher Ratio basis, 320 schools have teachers now where vacancies were empty due to the retirement or death of the teacher. In addition, teachers have been appointed to 989 schools running with only one teacher, increasing their teaching staff.

These new appointments will help in making 1,205 schools functional again.

Education Minister Shah said that the Sindh government is ensuring the availability of teachers in schools and all the viable schools in Sindh have become functional.

He urged teachers to perform their duties honestly, adding that “no school will remain closed due to unavailability of teachers now.”

Provincial Minister Sardar Ali Shah has appealed to civil society to take ownership of the schools in their areas, while steps are also being taken to make the monitoring system regarding teacher attendance more effective.
