KARACHI: The port city is under heightened security measures as the city administration has imposed Section 144 for two days, effective October 18-19, banning gatherings, rallies, and public meetings.

The decision comes in the light of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) calling for nationwide protests against the constitutional amendments today, October 18, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur announcing demonstrations in every district and city across the country.

In addition, Gandapur urged citizens to stand against what he termed unconstitutional amendments, warning of dire consequences for future generations if they remain silent.

This move aims to safeguard lives and property amid increasing security risks, as authorities fear public gatherings could be vulnerable to terrorist attacks. The restrictions specifically prohibit assemblies of five or more people, processions, and public meetings.

In a similar move, the Punjab government has enforced Section 144 across the province for two days, starting today, October 18.  According to the Punjab Home Department, all protests, processions, and public activities are banned during this period.

Earlier, PTI announced a nationwide protest on October 15, but due to the SCO summit in Pakistan, the leaders decided to postpone the protest to maintain law and order in the presence of foreign delegations.
