MUMBAI: Bollywood’s famous comedian and actor Rajpal Yadav has received a major setback from the court. The Delhi High Court has upheld its earlier verdict convicting Rajpal Yadav in several cheque bounce cases. He was earlier released from jail on interim bail in February.
The Indian court, while giving its verdict in this legal battle, has sentenced Rajpal Yadav to three months in prison in seven separate cases. However, all these sentences will run concurrently, which means that he will have to spend a total of three months in jail.
According to Indian media reports, the judge hearing the case, Justice Sorna Kanta Sharma, pronounced the verdict in seven cases filed by M/S Murali Projects Private Limited. The court also ordered Rajpal Yadav to pay Rs 1.5 crore to the complainant in each case.
Apart from this, he was also directed to pay Rs 1 lakh 4 thousand, an additional amount of Rs 75 thousand and Rs 25 thousand to the state.
The court also imposed a fine of more than Rs 5 crore on Rajpal Yadav’s wife Radha Rajpal Yadav in each case.
While pronouncing the verdict, Justice Sorna Kanta Sharma said, “Rajpal Yadav was given several opportunities to settle the matter and fulfill his promises, but he failed to do so.”
He added, “Rajpal Yadav and his lawyer gave statements and assurances in the court several times, but despite getting repeated opportunities, they did not keep their promises.”
The court has also given Rajpal Yadav the facility that he can challenge this decision in a higher court if he wants within two months.
It should be noted that these cases are related to cheque bounce, while further legal action is also expected in this matter.
