Pokémon voice artist Rachael Lillis, 46, dies due to cancer

NEW YORK: In a tragic incident Rachael Lillis, a new york based voice artist renowned for her roles as Misty and Jessie in the Pokémon TV series, films, and video games since the late 1990s, has passed away at the age of 46 due to breast cancer.

Lillis was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2024, after a few months into her treatment she lost the battle of life.

Lillis’s death was confirmed by her colleague Veronica Taylor, who voices Ash Ketchum. Taylor praised Lillis as “an extraordinary talent” whose “bright light shined through her voice” in both speaking and singing roles.

She noted that Lillis’s performances enriched many Saturday mornings and after-school hours with her exceptional comic timing and acting skills.

Moreover, Taylor shared that Lillis was deeply appreciative of the support she received during her cancer battle, which made a positive impact.

Lillis’s sister, Laurie Orr, also confirmed her death on a GoFundMe page set up earlier this year to support her cancer treatment and transition to a nursing home.

In addition, Orr described the loss as unexpected and deeply sorrowful but found solace in knowing her sister was now free from suffering.

The GoFundMe page has raised over $100,000, which will now be used to cover medical expenses, fund a memorial service, and support cancer research.

Moreover, Pokemon fans penned sweet messages along with heart-filled images of Rachel on social media, thanking her for entertaining and for her efforts to make the show a blockbuster.

 

Born in Niagara Falls, New York, in 1978, Lillis trained in opera before embarking on a voice acting career. Her voice graced 423 episodes of Pokémon from 1997 to 2015, and she also voiced Jigglypuff in the 2019 film Detective Pikachu and the Super Smash Bros video game series.

Lillis’s death shook the nation to the core, her loss can never be fulfilled. She entertained the whole world with her extraordinary talent, Pokemon fans can never forget her efforts to make the show a super hit. Her contributions to the entertainment industry will never be forgotten.
