LAHORE: Former Pakistani all-rounder and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood of Pakistan has expressed willingness to become head coach of the Pakistani national team, according to media reports.

The former all-around player will apply for the role of head coach. Mahmood is serving as the Green Shirts’ assistant coach and has a two-year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

According to sources,  Mahmood’s current goal is to lead the Pakistani cricket team as head coach.

In a recent interview, Azhar, who is presently an assistant coach, revealed his choice. “I’m going to apply for the Pakistan team head coach role,” he said.

His announcement comes during the PCB’s continuing search, with the appointment anticipated to be finalized after the May 4 application deadline. The timing is key, as Pakistan prepares for the T20 World Cup and other major duties.

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) started looking for a permanent Coach for the National Team, as the contract of the interim Coach Aqib Javed expired in February this Year.

The PCB’s hunt increased when Aqib Javed’s term ended after a dismal Champions Trophy group stage streak. While Saqlain Mushtaq was considered, Hesson’s name has garnered popularity due to his established track record and previous interest from the PCB in 2019 and 2024.
