Pakistan qualifies for Nations Hockey Cup semifinal on goal difference

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan have qualified for the semi-finals of the FIH Nations Hockey Cup on the basis of better goal difference. The semi-final match against France is scheduled for Friday.

Malaysia needed to beat Japan by a two-goal margin to advance in the ongoing tournament in Kuala Lumpur. However, Japan scored a goal in the last four minutes to clear Pakistan’s way to the semi-finals.

Both Pakistan and Malaysia finished the group stage with four points each, but Pakistan advanced on a better goal difference.

Pakistan had earlier lost to New Zealand in a close match by a scoreline of 4-3.

For Pakistan, Abdul Rahman scored two consecutive goals in the 13th and 14th minutes while the third goal was scored by Rana Waheed Ashraf in the 28th minute.

New Zealand’s Scott Coslet scored a hat-trick and Nicewood scored another goal to seal the victory.
