CAPR TOWN: South Africa has announced a strong squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup, with the surprise return of 37-year-old veteran fast bowler Shabnim Ismail making a splash.

Shabnim Ismail retired from international cricket in 2023, but will now once again represent the national team.

According to Cricinfo, the team will be led by Laura Wolvaardt, while veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has also joined the squad after recovering from illness.

Former captain Dane van Niekerk, who returned to international cricket after coming out of retirement last year, is also part of the World Cup squad.

The South African squad also includes key players like Tazmin Berts, Sonny Loos, Chloe Tryon, and Iyabonga Xhaka. Young all-rounder Kayla Reneke will play her first senior World Cup, while wicketkeeper-batsman Karabo Meso has also returned to the team after recovering from injury.

Head coach Mandla Mashembe described the return of Shabnam Ismail as a great boost for the team, saying that her experience and passion will benefit the team. He said that Shabnam still has a strong desire to do something special for South Africa.

Shabnam Ismail remains active in franchise leagues around the world after retirement. She won the Women’s Premier League with Mumbai Indians in 2025 and has played 92 T20 matches in various events, including the WBBL, The Hundred, and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League.

Selectors’ convener Clinton du Preez said that it was important to maintain the basic structure of the team as these players have been playing as a strong unit for the past few years.

South Africa will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia in Manchester on June 13.
