Apple to reduce production of iPhone Air by 80 percent

CALIFORNIA: Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that Apple is reducing orders for iPhone Air, in line with other analysts who have pointed out that there has been a slowdown in demand due to iPhone Air being significantly less popular than other iPhone 17 models.

Apple is slashing both shipments and production capacity for the iPhone Air, according to Kuo. Suppliers will have to cut most of their capacity by over 80% by the first quarter of 2026.

Besides, selected components with longer lead times will be phased out altogether by the end of 2025.

This action indicates that the iPhone Air, just like the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus previously, has not found a firm position in the market.

Kuo mentions that Apple’s Pro and base models already provide most of what high-end customers are looking for, with little room for new categories such as the Air.

While the drop in production may appear to be a failure of the iPhone Air, it does not necessarily indicate the end of the line.

The Pro models from Apple usually experience the greatest demand at launch, and Apple tends to ramp up production to accommodate those sales. Apple’s supply chain is flexible, making it possible for the company to redirect its focus as necessary.

Non-Pro iPhones tend to pick up steam later after the immediate launch window. It is still possible, though, that the new iPhone Air might be the sole variation we ever see, depending on the demand in the next few months.

Nevertheless, it is obvious to customers that the iPhone Air is a much less practical purchase compared to the other iPhones because it does not have specs and features, even at a $999 tag.
