LAHORE: Flooding is expected in Punjab’s rivers over the next 24 hours, prompting heightened vigilance from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and local authorities.

The PDMA spokesperson forecasts significant flooding in the Chenab River at Marala Khanpur and Qadirabad, with water levels potentially reaching 200,000 to 250,000 cusecs.

Moreover, the Ravi River is anticipated to have flows between 40,000 and 55,000 cusecs at Jassar and Shahdara. Medium-level flooding is also expected in the Nala Bein, while Palko will see low-level flooding. The Indus River is anticipated to experience low-level flood conditions.

In addition, Director General Irfan Kathia has stated that both PDMA and local authorities are on high alert and have made all necessary arrangements. Administrative units near the Chenab, Ravi, and other streams have been instructed to stay vigilant.

Under directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the public is being informed about potential risks. DG PDMA has advised the evacuation of residents from riverbeds and urged people to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and streams.

He emphasized that flood relief camps established by the Punjab government are fully equipped with essential services and encouraged the public to prioritize safety and cooperate with emergency measures.

Water flow in all rivers, barrages, dams, and channels is being closely monitored, with the PDMA control room actively overseeing the situation. For emergencies, the public can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129.
