6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes New Zealand, tsunami warning issued

AUCKLAND: A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck New Zealand, prompting a tsunami warning, according to foreign media reports.

According to media reports, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Tinau in New Zealand’s South Island, prompting a tsunami warning.

According to New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was about 40 kilometers (24.85 miles) north of Tinau, the gateway to the tourist destination of Fiordland.

Both the US Geological Survey and the German Research Center for Geosciences initially put the quake at a magnitude of 5.9 at a depth of more than 50 kilometers.
