NEW DELHI: An Air India A320 aircraft (flight AI 2744, registration VT-TYA) from Kochi skidded off the runway while landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday, amid heavy rain that affected visibility and ground conditions.

Initial reports suggest that the aircraft lost control shortly after touchdown due to bad weather, causing it to overshoot the runway. During the incident, three of the aircraft’s tyres reportedly burst, and one of its engines is likely to be damaged. Despite the complications, the aircraft managed to taxi safely to the terminal, where all passengers and crew disembarked without any injuries.

In an official statement, Air India confirmed the incident: “Flight AI2744 from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025 encountered heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion. The aircraft taxied to the gate without any issue, and all passengers and crew safely disembarked. The aircraft is currently grounded for a thorough inspection and highest level of safety personnel.”

Emergency teams were quickly deployed at Mumbai airport to deal with the situation. A CSMIA spokesperson provided further clarification:
At 09:27 on 21 July 2025, a flight from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Mumbai airport. Emergency response units responded immediately. All persons on board were safe. The primary runway (09/27) suffered minor damage, which is now under repair. To avoid disruption, operations are continuing on the second runway. The most important at CSMIA.

Airport officials are currently assessing the damage to Runway 09/27, while efforts are underway to ensure minimal disruption to flight operations.
