Crowds gather ahead of Iranian president’s funeral

TEHRAN: A large crowd of people Wednesday attended the funeral prayers in Iran’s capital city of Tehran to bid farewell to their late Iranian president and his companions who lost their lives in a copter crash on Sunday.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, presided over the burial prayers for the late President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions.

President Raisi’s and his companions’ bodies were taken on Tuesday from the northwest city of Tabriz to Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

On Thursday, President Raisi will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad.

President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Tabriz Friday Prayer Leader Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, and Governor of East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati were returning from a dam opening ceremony in Iran’s border with the Republic of Azerbaijan on Sunday when their helicopter crashed in mountainous areas in Varzaghan region.

Two bodyguards, two pilots, and a crew member were also killed in the incident.
