Dr Sania Nishtar Appointed as Gavi’s Chief Executive Officer

Dr Nishtar emphasized the monumental tasks ahead, including addressing the health impacts of climate change.

GENEVA – Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, announced a significant development on Thursday with the appointment of Senator Dr Sania Nishtar as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective March 18, 2024.

Dr Nishtar, currently serving as a Senator in Pakistan, brings over three decades of experience to her new role as a global public health leader and a trained medical doctor.

Her illustrious career includes serving as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation in the national government from 2018 to 2022. During the 2013 Caretaker Government in Pakistan, she held the position of Federal Minister.

Beyond her governmental roles, Dr Nishtar has played pivotal roles in civil society and international organizations. She is the founder of the non-profit NGO think tank Heartfile, advocating for health reform in Pakistan.

Dr Nishtar’s association with Gavi includes serving as the Chair of Gavi’s Evaluation Advisory Committee from 2011 to 2014 and being an independent member of Gavi’s Board in 2016.

Professor José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board, praised Dr Nishtar’s leadership qualities, highlighting her tireless advocacy for health equity, innovative thinking, and proven problem-solving skills in complex challenges over the years.

Expressing her gratitude, Dr Nishtar emphasized the monumental tasks ahead, including addressing the health impacts of climate change, tackling vaccine inequity, preparing for future outbreaks, and boosting routine immunization.

The outgoing CEO ad interim, David Marlow, congratulated the Board on securing Dr Sania Nishtar as the next CEO and acknowledged her leadership qualities.

Dr Nishtar’s appointment is particularly crucial for Gavi as it prepares to seek approval for its 2026–2030 strategy in 2024. Fundraising will be a key focus, with plans underway for a high-level event to launch Gavi’s investment opportunity in June, co-hosted by France and the Africa CDC. The appointment reflects Gavi’s commitment to addressing global health challenges with experienced and dedicated leadership.
