MAKKAH: Saudi police have arrested more than four thousand beggars while conducting operations around Masjid al-Haram.
According to media reports, the Saudi Ministry of Interior has instructed citizens and foreigners living in Saudi Arabia not to give charity to professional beggars.
A large number of beggars have arrived in Saudi Arabia during the month of Ramadan.
According to media reports, police have rounded up more than 4,000 beggars from the vicinity of the Masjid al-Haram and transferred them to police stations for legal action.
The Saudi Ministry of Interior issued a statement that it is demanded to crack down on begging, stating that professional beggars can pose a threat to security and that terrorist organizations can also raise funds through their activities.

The statement also mentioned that after Masjid al-Haram, operations against beggars will also be conducted around other holy sites, including Masjid al-Nabawi and major mosques in Saudi Arabia.
