BENGALURU: A huge celebration for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) maiden IPL title turned tragic when a stampede broke out at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, killing at least 11 people and injuring 25.
According to Indian media, thousands of fans had rushed to the stadium to celebrate the historic win. Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of people tried to enter through multiple gates at the same time, leading to a stampede.
The crowd proved to be huge despite a heavy police deployment. Some fans climbed trees to catch a glimpse of the event, while emergency responders faced difficulties in reaching the nearby Bowring Hospital due to traffic congestion.
Initially, 7 deaths and 4 serious injuries were reported – all of whom later succumbed to their injuries. Following the tragedy, the Karnataka government cancelled the “victory parade” from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium due to security concerns.
