ISLAMABAD: The Excise and Taxation Department of Islamabad has unveiled plans to implement a US-style vehicle registration system.

A recent notification stated that going forward, registration numbers will be assigned to vehicle owners and not to the vehicles themselves.

With this change, each individual will get a unique number plate that will be permanently linked to his or her name.

This updated policy will be applicable to both newly registered and pre-existing vehicles. When a vehicle is sold, the seller’s registration number will become inactive, and a different registration number will be issued to the new owner.

The notification also states that owners will have the option to keep their registration number for up to one year, even if they do not currently own the vehicle. If the number is not linked to a vehicle within this period, it will be cancelled.

According to the Director General Excise and Taxation Islamabad, this new method is designed to make the registration process more transparent and user-friendly.
