KARACHI: The government of Sindh has taken a significant step toward keeping the roads safer and preventing the issuance of fake motor vehicle fitness certificates.

Sources say that the government introduced the new Motor Vehicle Fitness Certificates and new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for motor vehicle inspectors (MVIs).

These newly introduced motor vehicles will have improved safety features, including barcoding, to ascertain better vehicle fitness and safer road conditions. Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasized this initiative is to stop the issuance of counterfeit motor vehicle fitness certificates, increase government revenue, and minimize environmental pollution.

To ensure adherence to the new system, the government shall maintain a central database of motor vehicles. All old records will be safely seized from the MVI wings from all of Sindh.

The traffic police, SOPs, and highway and motorway police will be on hand to help make sure this is done. Officers will periodically carry out snap-checks on the inspectors to check for violations. Those guilty of issuing fake certificates will be dealt with by the disciplinary law.

In related developments, Pakistan Customs has initiated a fresh policy that bars smuggled tempered cars from being used by government officials.

The motive is to stop the customs officers from putting thousands of impounded vehicles in their custody for personal use. Authorities have set limits on government officials using smuggled tempered vehicles, effectively nullifying the No Objection Certificates (NOCs) of all vehicles they have been using.
