KARACHI: In a ground breaking move, the Sindh government has launched a crackdown against individuals who have not returned the official vehicles or are using them for personal and unauthorized purposes.

In a meeting chaired by the Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon Sindh announced to register cases against those who have not returned official vehicles or are using them without permission.

Additionally, it was also decided to auction off abandoned government vehicles, with the aim of generating revenue for priority projects.

The meeting also discussed cost containment and transparency in the allocation and usage of official vehicles. Memon stressed that the use of official vehicles should be curtailed; vigilance should be exercised in keeping the expenses within limits.

The committee directed that clearly laid-out guidelines need to be devised by them concerning the use of official vehicles and the transparency expected in the auction process. The meeting was attended by Provincial Ministers Saeed Ghani and Ali Hassan Zardari and others.

Earlier, a new policy had been announced by the Sindh government for the number plates of private and commercial vehicles.

The decision says that all private vehicles will be using white number plates with the Sindh Ajrak design, while commercial vehicles will be on yellow plates with similar designs. The Excise department declared that yellow number plates on private vehicles and whole black number plates on commercial vehicles would be unacceptable from April 3, 2025.

This provides avenues for the state to raise revenue against vehicle tax defaulters and ensure all vehicles are sufficiently registered and taxed
