ISLAMABAD: The Federal government has unveiled a series of initiatives to provide social protection to the marginalized segment of society under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
While unveiling the budget for 2025-26, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb stated that the federal government has allocated Rs 592 billion for BISP. He further stated that the BISP will be increased by 15% in the coming fiscal year.
The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is a social safety net programme in Pakistan that provides support to low-income households. BISP was initiated in 2008, with a focus on the poorest and most vulnerable groups in society, particularly women, to alleviate poverty and encourage financial inclusion.
The beneficiaries are provided with regular cash transfers through a transparent and computerized system. The scheme relies on a National Socio-Economic Registry to make sure that assistance goes to the needy.
BISP has gradually added children’s educational assistance and economic empowerment schemes over the years. It has helped curb the impact of inflation and economic deprivation for millions.
It is one of the largest and most effective welfare schemes in Pakistan. It is functioning under the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and works along with international organizations to get funding and technical support.
The beneficiaries of the BISP Kafalat are currently receiving Rs 13,500 in the wake of the quarterly installment. However, the installment will increase to Rs14,500 from January 2026 as the government aims to provide more relief to the low-income families.
