Flour prices receive massive increase in Pakistan

LAHORE: People across Pakistan are expected to face more financial pressure after a major increase in flour prices following the arrival of the new wheat crop.

Flour mills have started supplying flour to grocery shopkeepers at higher rates from today. This situation is creating anxiety among residents who already experience difficulties due to the increasing costs of living.

According to sources from flour mills, both 10kg and 20kg flour bags will now be available in the market at increased prices. The updated costs of flour will rise by Rs115 for 10kg flour bags, which will now cost Rs1020, and the 20kg flour bag price will increase by Rs200.

Flour mill representatives explained that the main reason behind the increase is the sharp rise in wheat prices. The price of wheat per maund has gone up from Rs 3000 to Rs 3600.

The primary raw material used to produce flour is wheat, which explains this situation. The increase has raised production costs for flour mills. At the time when wheat prices reached Rs3000 per maund, a 10kg flour bag sold for Rs905, and a 20kg bag cost approximately Rs1810.

The flour mills changed their flour prices after the price increase because they needed to adjust their pricing system. The public will experience greater inflationary pressure from rising flour prices because multiple families already struggle to control their everyday spending.

Citizens have called on the government to take action, control prices, and provide relief measures. The increase occurred during a period when Pakistan experienced higher inflation rates, which surpassed official estimates in April, thereby creating fresh financial difficulties for families.

Data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Friday showed that headline inflation stood at 10.9 percent year-on-year in April 2026. The reading was notably above the Ministry of Finance’s earlier projection
