ISLAMABAD: The highly controversial Indian movie named ‘Satluj’ has been the talk of the town long before its release. The movie was later banned by the Indian authorities due to controversial narratives about Indian Sikhs.
The film, featuring Diljit Dosanjh as the main character, revolves around the story of Jaswant Singh, a real-life human rights activist from Punjab.
The movie took center stage once again after the leader of the Khalistan movement, Gurpatwant Singh, appeared on the ABN News Program ‘Sawal Se Age ‘, where he exposed the false narrative pushed through the movie.
Gurpatwant Singh revealed that the movie was earlier named ‘Punjab 95 ‘; however was later named Sutlej before its release. He argued that the movie pushes false propaganda of Indian authorities trying to portray that they did not have any involvement in secret cremations and enforced disappearances of thousands of Sikhs during the Punjab insurgency of the 1980s and 1990s.
According to him, the movie represents false historical claims that do not exist. The movie shows the proxy war period during the nineteen hundreds when Punjab’s Sikhs were subjected to cruelty.
In the 1900s, Sikhs became the subject of ultimate brutality by the Indian authorities; to sustain peace, the Sikhs decided to fight back against the Indian authorities.
During this time, the Indian authorities killed thousands of Sikhs; some didn’t even ceremented properly. Thousands of civilians and dissenting voices were captured and killed without a shred of due process or remorse, none of whom had anything to do with terrorism.
Jaswant Singh’s preliminary research yielded the names of around 25,000 people who had been cremated as unclaimed bodies while their families were still searching for them.
These deaths were the direct result of fake encounters and custodial brutality by the Indian authorities.
Diljit Dosanjh, Punjab’s top male actor and highly influential personality in India, has also become the subject of controversy due to his role in ‘Satluj’.
The leader of the Khalistan movement stated that Diljit, who is proud to be a Sikh, became a part of Indian propaganda by supporting Indian Prime Minister Modi in glorifying the false narrative in which thousands of innocent Sikhs lost their lives.
According to him, the Indian authorities killed several generations of Sikhs to end the Khalistan movement in Punjab. The movie only showcases the story of 25000 bodies that were discovered by Jaswant Singh; however, there were thousands of more unidentified bodies that were thrown in water or even burnt to hide the evidence.
The film itself faced immense real-world controversy and censorship, leading to a long delay before its release on the streaming platform ZEE5.
The movie was abruptly taken down from the platform in India shortly after its digital premiere, amid government review under the Information Technology Act.
According to Gurpatwant, the Indian government wanted to hide the truth that they killed innocent Sikhs in the name of terrorism. The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, made a failed attempt to change the Punjab Sikh history through the movie.
